Matthias Merckle

Personal Information

Born: March 31, 1841 in Hönig, Würtemburg, Germany
Died: January 11, 1907 in Sardis, Ohio
Buried: Sardis Hill Cemetery, Sardis, Ohio
Married: Elizabeth C. Holzworth on October 26, 1865
By Rev. Schultz of Marrietta, Ohio

Military Service

On October 17, 1861, Matthias enlisted into the Union Army for a three year tour of duty. He traveled to Woodsfield, Ohio joining Captain William Dougherty's Company K of the 62nd Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry. The regimental Description book listed Matthias as 20 years old, 5 feet 8 and 1/2 inches in height with brown eyes and dark hair. On July 13 or 15, 1862 at Harrison's Landing, Virginia, members of his company were transferred to Captain S. C. Regans Company of the 7th Independent Battery New York Light Artillery by order of General Peck. He was discharged October 18, 1864 at Chaffins Furnace, Virginia.

Marriage

Upon his return to Monroe County, he married Elizabeth C. Holzworth on October 26, 1865 in Trail Run, Ohio. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Schultz of Marrietta, Ohio.

Life in Ohio

Matthias went on to become a prosperous farmer. He owned and farmed land along the Ohio River near Sardis, Ohio. Some of this land is now a Golf Course between Hannibal and Sardis, Ohio. In 1883, Matthias applied for an invalid pension from the government which was granted in 1889 and continued until his death in 1907. His widow applied for the continuation of that pension until her death. Between 1866 and 1893, Matthias and Elizabeth had thirteen children. As his oldest children married and went off to begin a life of their own, Matthias gave each of them a portion of his land as a homestead. Unfortunately he died before he could give each child land, which led to contention among the children.

Notes:

Spelling Discrepancies:

Although Mathias is the common spelling, the signature found on Matthias' Civil War pension application clearly shows two "T"s in the name. Even his stone has the common Mathias spelling.
